3-Person Backpacking Tents

Designed for small groups or comfortable two-person use, the 3-person tent sleeps three hikers or gives two walkers plenty of room along with all their gear. A good balance of liveable space and weight for your bivouac: here's how to choose the right one.

The 3-person tent, who's it for?

The 3-person tent fits three walkers side by side, or two hikers who want extra space to stow their gear undercover. It's the format for small groups and couples wanting comfort, sitting between the compact 2-person and the 4-person family tent. A good balance between liveable space and weight to carry.

Space, weight and carrying

Check the floor width, headroom and the porches for storage. Carried between several people, a tent can be shared out: everyone takes a part, which lightens the load in each backpack. Lightweight and ultralight models trim space to save grams - it's up to you to weigh up comfort against trek length.

A tent that stands up to wind and rain

A good tent handles the wind and rain of the season: waterproof flysheet, taped seams, sturdy aluminum poles and good tension. Your choice depends on the time of year: three-season for the warmer months, a reinforced structure for a blustery autumn. Compare all formats in our bivouac and trekking tents collection.

Choosing the right one

Start with the actual number of occupants and your priority: roomy comfort or lightness. A well-designed tent pitches easily and dries quickly. To carry the tent, a spacious trekking backpack does the rest. An ultralight model lightens your walking kit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 3-person tent suit two people?

Yes, and it's really comfortable: two occupants can enjoy plenty of space to stash bags and gear safely out of the weather. The slight extra weight compared to a 2-person tent is easily offset by the real gain in comfort at camp.

How much does a 3-person tent weigh?

Depending on the model, roughly 2 to 4kg, less for ultralight versions. When shared between two or more people, the load becomes much more manageable - even on a multi-day trek. Weight increases with space and durability.

How to choose a 3-person tent?

Look at the floor space, height, porches, weight and waterproofing (hydrostatic head, taped seams). Match the comfort/weight trade-off to how you'll use it: a small group trekking or a couple heading off the beaten track.

Three-season or four-season?

A 3-season tent is fine for spring through autumn in mild conditions. For winter, snow and strong winds, a more robust 4-season tent is needed, though it comes at the cost of extra weight.
